Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this website, including neurodivergent and disabled people.

Summary

  • We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
  • You can change fonts, colours, text size and spacing on every page.
  • Tell us if something doesn't work for you and we'll fix it or find another way.

Make the site work for you

Select the Accessibility button at the bottom right of any page to:

  • make text bigger, up to 200%
  • switch to a dark, high contrast, low glare or tinted colour scheme
  • use a dyslexia-friendly font, such as OpenDyslexic, Lexend or Atkinson Hyperlegible
  • increase spacing between letters, words and lines
  • stop animations and background video
  • highlight links, enlarge the focus outline, remove colour or turn on a reading guide

Your choices are saved on your device. You can also use your browser or device settings, which this site respects, including reduced motion and zoom up to 400%.

How we've built it

  • Every page is designed to work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline.
  • Pages use clear headings and landmarks for screen reader users.
  • Text and controls meet WCAG AA colour contrast.
  • We write in plain English and avoid idioms where we can.
  • Background video can always be paused and never plays if you've asked for reduced motion.
  • Images have text alternatives, and charts are also available as tables.

How we tested it

Before launch in October 2026, we checked every page with automated testing tools and by hand, including keyboard-only use, zoom, phone-sized screens and each colour scheme. We fixed the problems we found. We plan to test with more screen readers and with neurodivergent users, and to check the site again at least once a year.

Known limitations

  • Videos from YouTube and Vimeo use those sites' own players, which we don't control. Where a video has speech, we aim to provide captions.
  • PDF downloads, such as our research study, may not work as well with assistive technology as our web pages. The same content is always available as a web page.
  • Sign-in to our news editor uses Cloudflare's own sign-in pages, which we don't control. This only affects our editors.

If you find a problem that isn't listed here, please tell us.

We aim to reply within 10 working days.

If you're not happy with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service in England, Scotland and Wales, or the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.

About this statement

As a charity, we are not covered by the public sector accessibility regulations, but we follow the same approach because we believe everyone should be able to use our site. We review this statement at least once a year.
